BEER brewers Teignworthy have joined in the chorus of regrets over the looming closure of Newton Abbot’s Tuckers Maltings after more than a century.

Company bosses, who stressed their successful operation is not affected by their neighbours demise, insisted today ‘for us it’s business as usual.’

Teignworthy is based in the same building as Tuckers Maltings near the town’s Osborne Park.

Owner John Lawton told the Mid-Devon Advertiser that Tuckers’ closure marked a very sad day for the town but wanted to make it clear that Teignworthy was staying open.

An out-of-the-blue announcement that Tuckers would be shutting up shop after 118 years in the town was made yesterday.

Maltings’ shock shut down has been blamed on difficulties in staying competitive in today’s modern market.

Teignworthy, which has been operating out of its Newton Abbot site for nearly 25 years, is famed for its tipples including Gun Dog, Beachcomber and Old Moggie.
