FOR the very first time a Newton Abbot side will play in the FA Cup tomorrow.

Buckland Athletic FC will host Poole side Hamworthy United in the first preliminary round of the world's most famous football knockout tournament.

A win for the relatively young local club, formed in 1977, would see them five matches away from reaching the first round proper – presenting the possibility of a dream match-up with such illustrious sides as Leeds United, Charlton Athletic or even our own local side league team Torquay United.

Commercial manager Ian Miller is counting on a large crowd to cheer them on at their ground at Homers Heath, Kingskerwell.

'We are asking for as many fans to support us as possible. It promises to be an emotional and special occasion.

'The club is asking supporters to turn up in yellow, Buckland Athletic's colours – it promises to be quite a sight.'

Although Hamworthy play at a slightly higher level, Miller is optimistic that the Newton Abbot side will still be in the famous competition at 5pm tomorrow.

'The boys are really up for this and I'm sure they'll raise their game,' he said.

The game, which kicks off at 3pm, is sponsored by Firewatch South West Ltd, and the club's best supporters, Frank and Rosemary Burley, are proudly sponsoring the match ball.

A replica of the FA Cup trophy will be showcased at the ground and after the match there will be karaoke in the clubhouse.
