ONE run-down, derelict building in the heart of Newton Abbot is set to have a new lease of life pumped into it.
The former post office in the Market Walk has been snapped up by Teignbridge Council.
The 2,500 square foot building has been sitting empty for more than 10 years.
The bold step by the district authority is part of its long-term plan to enhance the town as a retail and leisure destination, following the council’s purchase of the Market Walk in December for £13million.
The council is looking for tenants to take over the premises but won’t reveal who the likely contenders for the prime location are.
Cllr Jackie Brodie, Teignbridge’s ward member for Newton Abbot Bushell, said: ‘Many in the town were very disappointed when the post office closed its doors in Market Square.
‘The key building has stood empty and looked run down for far too long.
‘We, the council tax payers of Newton Abbot, will need to see an early return on this considerable investment and I hope a user can soon be found that will enhance the retail mix in the town and bring a boost to the local economy.’
The other ward member, Cllr Judy Grainger added: ‘I welcome this acquisition as a key step in delivering Teignbridge’s bold vision for the town.’
The council completed the purchase of the former post office on August 31.
