MARKET Street, a new, high quality restaurant and social enterprise in Newton Abbot, opened its doors to the public this week.
After a successful pilot scheme last year the charity Young Devon is working with Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage to train young chefs with quality food, including squid starters, local mussels and fancy veg.
Alison Jarrett, general manager of Market Street, said: ‘I joined Young Devon so I could give something back to the young people of my community. I’m excited for the restaurant to open now. I have lots of ideas to make Market Street a really special place to dine in Newton Abbot.’
Year-long apprenticeships will now be running at the restaurant, as well as 10-week long traineeships.
Tim Tod, chief executive of Young Devon, said: ‘We’re very excited to be offering seasonal and locally sourced menus in the town whilst, at the same time, giving valuable training to over 30 local young people each year.
‘We’re looking forward to welcoming customers to Market Street where they can try our great food, great drink and support a great cause.’
Market Street’s skilled and experienced chef and general manager will support young people into careers in the catering and hospitality sector. A chef and front of house apprentice will learn the ropes of working in a restaurant and what it takes to provide a high quality service.
Market Street is at 6 Market Street, Newton Abbot. It’s open Wednesdays to Saturdays.
