IN an incredible swing the Liberal Democrats turned around a 400-vote margin Teignbridge Council Conservative seat at Ipplepen into a 298 vote victory.

Alistair Dewhirst polled 756 votes against tory Phil Coombes' 458 in the by-election on Thursday last week, which saw a 58.7 per cent turnout and a 34 per cent swing from the Conservatives to the Lib Dems.

The by-election resulted from the death of 87-year-old Victor Elliott, father of the council, who died three weeks after a farming accident.
