A call has been made to bring the Heathfield branch line back into full operation and even reopen it as far as Bovey Tracey.

Supporters say the scheme could help combat road congestion as the district gears up to take thousands of new homes.

Cllr Anne Fry told a meeting of Newton Abbot Town Council on Wednesday night that Devon was reviewing the rail franchise for the region with operator First Great Western.

In her role as a county councillor she had earlier that day stressed during a debate at County Hall the need for improved services.

She had been delighted to hear that in future 'significantly more trains' could be stopping at Newton Abbot.

'If that happens it's good news for the area,' she said.

Referring to the Heathfield line, where freight operations recommenced in December after a decade of inactivity, she said clay firms were now also being encouraged to think about using it and commented: 'Perhaps passenger trains could follow.'<
