A NEWTON Abbot charity shop is delighted to be reopening this week, 19 months after it was forced to close at the start of the pandemic.
Young Lives vs Cancer, the UK’s leading children’s cancer charity, has 18 charity shops in England which lost around £1.5 million in takings due to Covid-19.
This month three South West shops are back in business including the popular Newton Abbot branch in Queen Street.
Acting shop manager Becky Costello said the shop was actively recruiting volunteers as well as a manager.
She said: ‘We are all so excited that the shop was able to open again on Tuesday.
‘We have around 12 to 15 volunteers but we really need more volunteers to help in the shop.
‘I love seeing all the volunteers, we have some really lovely, kind people here.
‘I also love working for a children’s cancer charity and knowing what the money is going to.
‘The best thing about charity shop work is there is always something different to do, you never know what you are going to unpack or who is going to come in. The strangest thing I have seen is probably a taxidermy armadillo which had been turned in to a fruit bowl. A little boy fell in love with it and bought it. You never know what you are going to get.
The Newton Abbot Young Lives vs Cancer shop is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm.
