Thousands of historic transport fans flocked to Powderham Castle at the weekend for the 36th annual rally arranged by the Crash Box and Classic Car Club of Devon.

The weather behaved itself on both days and the quality and diversity of the vehicles was as good as it has ever been with hundreds of entries by clubs and individuals from across the region.

The best in show award was presented by Lord Devon to Pauline Leaver, from Kingsteignton, and her 1965 Riley 1.5, the only car she owns and which is driven every day.

'I've just given my little girl a kiss because she deserves it. she's never won first prize before and I'm absolutely over the moon,' she said.

The best commercial vehicle award went to Newtonian Rob Davies and his Volvo truck. He accepted the award with baby Amy in his arms.

The annual gathering provided the perfect venue for a cheque presentation to Shelterbox.

Teignmouth Rotarian Mike Waters, whose power steering company is based in Dawlish, was at the show to reveal his hand built one-off special based on a vintage Alvis.

He was also there to hand over more than £1,500 to the mercy charity, enough cash to provide emergency relief for 30 people.

The money was raised at Mr Waters' 50th birthday party held at Teignmouth Golf Club last month and came from donations in lieu of gifts and cards.

'There's not a lot you really need when you reach 50 and as Shelterbox is such a fantastic organisation, and Rotary's adopted charity, I asked for donations,' he said

Accepting the cheque was Shelterbox representative and fellow Rotarian Colin Timms.

He said:?'I've known Mike for many years and we're extremely grateful that he chose to support Shelterbox in this way.

'This will give 30 people a tent, sleeping bags, sleeping rolls, plates and purified water, indeed everything they need for basic shelter during an emergency.'

The fundraising continued at the show with members of Dawlish Water Rotary showing off the contents of a Shelterbox.

'The public have been very good. we've had a great response,' said spokesman Roy East.
