YOUNG musicians will be in action at the first of a new musical initiative at Powderham Castle.
Powderham Live is the brainchild of AJ Countess of Devon and will see a line up of 12 acts performing in the James Wyatt music room.
Inspired by the castle hosting Radio 1 Big Weekend earlier this year, the event aims to support young artists in the region.
Among the performers will be a jazz pianist, singer songwriters, a violinist and an electric guitarist, and it will be followed by a DJ in the castle libraries.
The earl and countess are keen to help young artists and this is the launch of what will become an annual celebration of music.
Teenage students have received a personal invitation from the Countess of Devon to showcase their talent.
AJ explained: ‘While working with the BBC Academy, we were given the opportunity to meet many of the local school music departments and young musicians.
‘It was a highlight of the Big Weekend that inspired us to open our doors and give young artists the opportunity to take centre stage at Powderham.
‘We are lucky to have this magical space and we are looking forward to the performers bringing our music room to life in a new way.
‘We are very grateful for the enthusiasm and help from our local community, school music programs, and local charity The Helen Foundation in launching Powderham Live.’
Teignbridge charity The Helen Foundation supports young people’s aspirations in the arts.
Trustee Roger Kirk said: ‘The Helen Foundation is delighted to support this very exciting initiative by Powderham Castle: encouraging young people to participate in arts activities of all kinds is central to the vision of The Helen Foundation.
‘Offering talented young musicians this special opportunity to perform at the castle will not only provide a truly memorable experience for those taking part, but encourage other budding performers to come forward on a future occasion.
‘THF is very grateful for the continuing patronage of Diana, Dowager Countess of Devon and to Powderham Castle, which selected the charity to support this year.’
The concert takes place today.
