Closed circuit tv operators foiled a card cloning attempt on a cash machine in Newton Abbot on Wednesday. Police and bank staff were also involved and three men were arrested after being seen acting suspiciously at the Alliance and Leicester cash machine in Courtenay Street.'It was a lucky spot by me then the whole system worked well. It was a good partnership arrest,' said Teignbridge CCTV coordinator Trevor Austin. He said police had circulated descriptions of the three after similar incidents in Brixham and Paignton.Mr Austin said: 'At 11.40am I saw two men who fitted the description acting suspiciously around the ATM machine and kept an eye on them. 'One of the security guards checked the machine and then backed off. He saw the two men joined by a third, who stuck something on it.'Police were alerted and arrested the three, one as he tried to make his escape into the Iceland supermarket. They also seized a blue BMW 520 parked in Devon Square, near St Paul's Church. A police spokesman said that a hi-tech crime unit had recovered a recording unit from the vehicle. A 19-year-old man from Enfield has been released on police bail to Torquay police station on August 3. At the time of going to press the other two – another 19-year-old and a 24-year-old – were still in police custody, but were also expected to be released on police bail.An Alliance and Leicester spokesman praised the operation and added: 'As soon as we were aware of the issue, we took the machine out of service immediately. 'The numbers of customers who would have been at risk was very small anyway. We check our machines regularly to ensure that everything is OK.'He confirmed no customer had lost any money in the cloning attempt.'We are working with police in their investigation. It sounds as though their prompt action has brought about the right result and that is very good news.'
