WORK is well underway for the upgraded CCTV system in Dawlish.

Contractors have been working on the camera for the last few weeks to give the network and complete overhaul.

Town councillors approved the refurbishment works, totalling £25,000 a few months ago.

Work started last month on the first phase of the scheme.

This was for all existing locations which have been upgraded, including the Manor House.

The locations for the current cameras are: The Manor, Barton Hill Car Park, the Strand car park, The Strand and Brunswick Place.

The second further phase, work on which is ongoing, will include all places needing extra permissions, such as the new Manor House play park and the children’s trail along the Brook.

Work on that is expected to start imminently and will include areas which require further service before installation.

These are at the Riverside Centre, King Street and further along The Strand.

Sound and Vision in Newton Abbot have been carrying out the work.

Cllr Val Mawhood, said: ‘It is much better quality and provide far better pictures.

‘It will be far more useful to the police and for the benefit of residents and tourists.’

She said it had been some ‘considerable time’ since the system had been upgraded.

She explained: ‘It is a brilliant system, modernising our existing cameras and giving much clearer images and even in poor light conditions.’

The camera network can be monitored daily and recordings can be given to police when required.
