A PHENOMENAL £5,000 and rising... that’s how much 11-year-old Charlotte Saunders has now raised for UNICEF’s Ukraine Appeal.

Charlotte thought of the fundraiser after attending a vigil in her home village of Ipplepen with her Mum, Emma.

The Year 7 student at Newton Abbot College has been hard at work ever since and featured in the paper over the past couple of weeks.

Charlotte said: ‘I was watching the news on the telly before that and I felt like I just wanted to do something as I felt so sorry for the children who have to go into bomb shelters every night.’

Charlotte attended the official opening of the Mid-Devon Advertiser’s new offices in Newton Abbot’s Courtenay Street, attended by mayors, councillors and the town’s business leaders.

Editor Nick Knight presented her with a certificate of appreciation.

Her Mum, Emma, has since said: ‘I want to let you know that her total has just passed the £5,000 mark which is just phenomenal!

‘The support and kindness shown by the local community has been amazing. Thank you so much for the part you have played in this.

‘With the news coming out of Ukraine getting more horrendous by the day I hope that the money raised will make a very small positive contribution to helping out in some way.’
