YOUNG families in outlying Dartmoor villages are to get extra help thanks to a new travelling bus from the ABC Children's Centre, Buckfastleigh. The bus will be stacked with toys which children can borrow. It is also hoped that language therapists, Job Centre Plus professionals and health visitors will be on board to answer parents' queries and offer on-the-spot professional advice. ABC Children's Centre manager Mandy Bowden said that she was still consulting on the details of the service but hoped it would start in mid-October. 'Isolation is a worry. It is so rural, if they don't have transport it is very difficult to get out and attend social groups. We take services out and enhance things that are there,' she said At present, it is planned that the bus will go out once a fortnight, stopping at two centres. Parents will be able to get help on such topics as breast-feeding, weaning, choosing a school, toys suitable for different ages, the role of the health visitor and information on housing and benefits. They also hope to set up additional play sessions. If the scheme is a success, Ms Bowden hopes to increase the frequency. Other organisations are already expressing an interest in using it. 'We would like to see it out doing something every day. That will build with demand.' The ABC Children's Centre is the successor to Mini-Sure Start and caters for children under the age of five. Its geographical range has enlarged to include Ashburton, Buckfast, Holne, Scorriton, Dean Prior, Combe, Dartneet, Poundsgate, Lower Town, Ponsworthy, Buckland-in-the-Moor and Widecombeinthe-Moor. 'Now we have got around 550 under fives. It is quite a challenge, because they are spread out,' she said.
