HOMES and businesses in Ashburton are in danger of flooding because drains and gullies have not been maintained regularly, the town’s mayor has claimed.
Town and district councillor John Nutley is laying the blame firmly at the feet of budget-hit County Hall.
The infuriated first citizen has even pledged to support any flood victims making a compensation claim against Devon County Council if their properties are inundated.
Mr Nutley reckons several drains and gullies are clogged up with silt and rubbish which should have been cleared away earlier this year.
He complained this week: ‘We were told by the county council that, because of cutbacks, we would only be having our roadside gullies cleaned once a year – and in some cases every two years.’
