Proposed changes to a Denbury housing development will improve its appearance, according to the people behind the project. Last year, businessman Mike Perryman won a lengthy fight to develop 11 homes on the old site of his Denbury Diesels car dealership in West Street. A condition imposed was that the height of the new buildings should not exceed that of the old garage. To achieve that, and provide sufficient internal headroom, it was agreed to lower the pavement. Now Mr Perryman, and his agent John Dodds, have said the original pavement level outside plots one to seven should be retained despite it meaning lower ceilings inside the new properties. In a new application to Teignbridge Council they said: 'After careful consideration it is appreciated that it would retain a far better visual effect in this part of the village if the existing curb line levels were maintained and the existing feel maintained. 'Although this has led to a significant loss of headroom... it has been agreed that this is a very worthwhile sacrifice to make. 'Also the reduction in height of the houses improves the visual balance of the elevation on to West Street.' According to the report planning officers have already indicated that they are likely to approve the change. Mr Perryman originally ran into stiff opposition to his scheme which has taken nine years to come to fruition and involved a planning inquiry which he lost before submitting fresh plans.
