EFFORTS to curb speeding along one of the busiest roads in Dawlish have been stepped up with a new community speedwatch operation.

A newly-formed speedwatch group has been in action along the A379 on the outskirts of the town checking vehicles were not breaking the 30mph speed limit.

Speedwatch members Robin Buchanan, Linda Petherick and John Petherick spent time at the side of the road monitoring vehicle speeds.

Over the next few months the group will be checking speeds of vehicles in other areas of Dawlish.

When a vehicle is detected exceeding the speed limit, its details are fed back to the police who can take appropriate action, usually a letter to the registered keeper.

Linda explained: ‘Community Speedwatch aims to educate drivers who exceed the speed limit and make communities safer by reducing vehicle speeds.

‘What we find is that when drivers see us they tend to slow down which is what we want to achieve as speed is one of the main factors in fatal road collisions.’
