WORK on the long-awaited £4million Teignmouth flood scheme is now well under way.

Heavy earth moving machinery has been moved in to dig out large holes all around the harbour and back beach area in preparation for the wall which will combat the threat of rising sea levels inundating the low lying town centre area.

The shoreline resembles a huge construction site at the moment, but when the work is completed later in the year, the defences should blend in well, just as they have across the estuary at Shaldon. Residents and businesses have welcomed the project, which will lift the blight on new development in the rundown Brunswick Street area and protect existing properties from suffering massive damage from a flood surge.
