THE consultation period for a planning application seeking permission for more than 30 homes in Newton Abbot has been extended following an intervention by the area’s county councillor.

Councillor Jacqueline Fry (Reform UK, Newton Abbot North) secured the extension regarding the proposed 33 home development at Howton Road, Highweek after submitting a formal request to the planning authority.

Cllr Fry highlighted that public notices were placed in locations that were inaccessible or difficult to read, thereby limiting residents’ ability to engage with the consultation process.

‘So far, over 135 objections have been registered,’ said Cllr Fry.

‘This clearly demonstrates the strength of feeling within the community.

‘I sincerely hope the Council listens to these voices and looks beyond the potential revenue this development may bring’, Cllr Fry added.

Cllr Fry said: ‘We must prioritise building on brownfield sites rather than allowing development in areas that risk irreversible damage to our villages and green spaces.

‘The character and sustainability of our communities must come first’.

To view the documents in detail, and to make a comment on the application, visit Teignbridge District Council’s planning portal and enter ‘25/01451/MAJ’ into the search-box.

The deadline has been extended to November 14.

Newton Abbot Town Council objected to the application, as did Newton Abbot & District Civic Society.

Wyse Homes was denied planning permission by Teignbridge District Council (TDC) for the scheme in 2018, but then won its case at appeal.

It allowed the permission to lapse, but has now resubmitted the application.

The proposed development will make a ‘positive contribution to the local housing stock’ and ‘raises the bar in terms of design and sets a benchmark for future development in the area’, the design and access statement reads.
