The owners of an historically important but struggling Chudleigh pub have won permission to build ten homes in the car park and convert part of the building into flats.

Supporters say the plan will provide suitable town centre accommodation and give the business a chance to survive.

Those living next to the site fear they will suffer overcrowding and a loss of privacy.

Kelly and Colleen Townsend were told this week they could carry out the changes to the grade-two listed Old Coaching House, Fore Street, by members of Teignbridge Council's development control committee.

Their decision brings to an end a drawn out battle to develop the site which has involved special meetings of the town council, revised plans and a lengthy on-site meeting.
