All I can say is whoopee!

Many years ago, when I was first elected to serve on Newton Abbot Town Council in 2003, I got on my high horse over two emotive issues – the cattle market and Asda. I didn't want the former to close and I didn't want the latter in town.

I did, however, make a suggestion that instead of a 'tin box with a quiff', we actually put feelers out for a hotel.

I was laughed at – why do we need a hotel?

Yes, we do need a proper hotel. Now here is a very logical suggestion – why not in the old tax offices and the Job Centre? One half is empty and the other doesn't need that massive space.

Why doesn't the Job Centre take over one of the empty properties in town near where it used to be, and that huge building with its own car park could be turned into a very smart hotel.

It would cost a lot less to do the alterations than build from new and it would be ideally situated for the racecourse (the racing fraternity), the market (the farming community) and our own information centre, town centre, buses and transport to the beaches and the moors – perfect, for the tourist.
