BOVEY Tracey Town Council made it clear on Monday it was not against cycling or cycle routes.
The council came in for criticism after maintaining it would not allow cycling through Millmarsh Park, earmarked as a route for the Bovey Tracey-Moretonhampstead cycle track.
Town clerk, Terry Westwood said it had been pointed out that there was a no cycling prohibition order on the recreation area in the park.
Cllr Fernley Holmes said there were various clubs using Millmarsh, including the football club and the Scouts, and there were people who liked to walk there.
'It is an asset we do not want messed up. If they want to use it, they should have asked the owner, which is this council. They put the cart before the horse. They should have approached this council in a proper manner,' he said.
Deputy mayor, Cllr David Risdon said as far as the cycle route was concerned he thoroughly supported it.
'I think I am one voice. When it comes in as a planning application I think we can get something that will please both sides,' he said.
Cllr George Gribble said he had nothing against cycling. 'In Millmarsh we have a play area for under-12s. Mothers with prams do not want to be pestered by cyclists and then we could have motorcyclists.
'I would object to cycling through the cemetery as well. Most cyclists are considerate, but some are inconsiderate.
'This should be by negotiation, not by ploughing it through,' said Cllr Gribble.
The council is angry that Devon County Council officer, Graham Cornish, who deals with cycle routes, has not been back to consult with it regarding the cycle route.
Cllr Anna Klinkenberg said Mr Cornish should have come back. 'I found his attitude leaves a lot to be desired,' she said.
Cllr Alan Griesiell said it was the first time the officer had been in Bovey Tracey. 'He put a line on a map and he put a line under a bridge. I do not know whether he wanted to drown the cyclists,' he said.
The mayor, Cllr Avril Kerswell, said the council was not against a cycle route in the right area.
'If Mr Cornish comes back and asks our opinion and spoke to us in the proper manner and asked what we suggest, I think we could talk and come up with a route with which we would all be happy,' she said.
