It now appears that the 'senior licensing officer' (for goodness sake, how many are there on the payroll at Teignbridge Council?) now says she doesn't mind the flag of St George being displayed on Ms Said's cab – it is more the words 'Local Driver' that causes offence to foreigners (though perish the thought that she actually used that word).

And how many have actually complained?

Well, that's a simple problem to sort out, isn't it? Let me suggest a few words that could accompany Ms Said's flag of St George (the flag of England let's remind ourselves).

How about 'British Born' or simply 'British Driver'. This would invite foreign-born drivers to display their country's flag with appropriate wording, wouldn't it?

What could possibly be offensive about that – except to those with a left-wing, PC-addled mindset hell-bent on suppressing anything that could remotely be construed as promoting 'English-ness'.

Come to think of it – how about the flag of St George with one simple word to accompany it – 'English'! Simple. What could possibly be offensive in calling yourself English? Though I expect it would send Teignbridge councillors and 'officers' reaching for the smelling salts!

It is time Teignbridge council admitted it has made a right pig's ear of this whole case, dropped it and moved on to more important things. It has made itsef a laughing stock.MORE LETTERS IN OUR DIGITAL EDITION
