NEWTON Abbot town councillors have welcomed plans to redevelop the old hospital site, but would like to see more housing to cater for the town's expanding population, writes Lindsey Sill. Keyworker Homes Ltd wants to build a 48-bed hotel, a 48-bed retirement home, 75-bed residential care home, around 55 homes, a vet's practice and three retail units on the empty East Street site. 'We're thrilled that such a major site is going to be redeveloped. We need this to happen,' said ward councillor Kelvyn Shantry. 'My view is that we have enough care homes, enough residential homes in Newton Abbot. What we're short of is affordable housing. We'd like to see the balance redressed.'
