NEW rules brought in by Devon County Council mean 16-year-olds will have to prove they need help with travel to school or college.

The cuts voted in by the authority’s cabinet have removed the automatic entitlement to transport for post-16 students.

In the newly approved policy, support from the local authority will only be available where a student can establish there is no other source of support and that the absence of that support would prevent them from accessing further education.

But the move has been blasted by the county’s Lib Dems who have backed worried parents who fear the impact of the changes will discourage youngsters from getting the best education they can locally.
