Cllr Sally Morgan resigned her town council seat within hours of losing her Bovey Tracey Rural post at last week's Devon County Council elections, The councillor said she was tired at what she called a 'negative atmosphere' at town council meetngs, and she dreaded attending themCllr Morgan was one of five Liberal Democrats who lost out as the Conservative vote surged across Teignbridge and throughout the county in last week's elections. She was defeated by Cllr George Gribble – a former mayor of Bovey Tracey – but refused to comment after the result was announced at Newton Abbot Leisure Centre. She tendered her resignation 'with immediate effect' by email to the mayor, Cllr Michelle Davey, having served six years on the town council. Her decision to stand down will be reported to the council's finance, resources and general purposes committee on Monday. Cllr Davey said it was with regret that the council accepted Cllr Morgan's resignation but she did not know the reason.Cllr Morgan said she got to the point where she dreaded going to town council meetings because it was such a negative atmosphere.'I found it was extremely negative. It was sapping my energy and I would rather use my energy in a positive way,' she said.Cllr Morgan said she was disappointed that the town council had used its Quality Update Newsletter, paid for by public funds, to try to discredit her during an election period. In a story headed Working Together As A Team it stated: 'A political publication recently distributed in April throughout the parish, purported that many of these projects would not have been possible without the financial support from a local county and district councillor's personal community funds.'Your town mayor, Cllr Michelle Davey, would like to make it clear to all residents that it has not been the efforts of one person or one political party to make these projects happen, but the local community working closely together.'Cllr Morgan said she had supported and helped groups but had never said she did it all herself.Earlier this year she rattled the Tories' cage when she reported Teignbridge and town councillor Anna Klinkenberg to the district authority's standards committee. The complaint related to Cllr Klinkenberg's former role as manager at the Bovey Tracey Information Centre over an alleged expenses claim. The claim is being investigated by Graham Rowe, of the Local Government Consultancy, who is acting on behalf of the Teignbridge Council monitoring officer. His draft report is expected to be published in the next fortnight and a final and public report within the next month.Cllr Morgan remains on Teignbridge Council, where she is executive member for customer and financial services. For the past two months that department has met its target by paying 100 per cent of invoices to small businesses the council has had work from, to help during the credit crunch. She said: 'I feel on Teignbridge I can represent the people of Bovey Tracey and Heathfield in a positive way.'She remains parliamentary Lib Dem candidate for Central Devon.l The town council now has a vacancy and provided ten electors do not request an election, will fill the space by co-option.
