IF Devon County Council's Cabinet approve watered down plans for the 'best and final bid' for the South Devon Link Road, the result of the submission to the Department for Transport is expected to be known by December.

The cabinet meets in county hall on Wednesday to consider a report outlining a new bid for the link road which would take vehicles between Newton Abbot and Torquay, around Kingskerswell.

A couple of years ago a long running public inquiry into the then £120-£130m scheme – looking at compulsory purchase and side road closure orders for the link road – heard the government was sticking with its approval of £107.8m in the Regional Funding Allocation for the 5.5kilometres bypass from Penn Inn to the Torbay Ring Road.

The inspector's report has remained with the secretary of state awaiting clarification of government funding.
