HOW bad does it have to get? Fed up with overgrown trees and bushes near a Teignmouth bus stop the local councillors and volunteers went into action.

The bushes and trees covering the pavement and forcing pedestrians into the road have been cut back by Teignmouth West Ward councillors and volunteers.

The pavement by the bus stop in Bitton Park Road opposite Bitton House, had been covered by bushes and trees that Devon County Council has not cut back and had claimed didn’t require any.

Angry residents said that the issue was comprising the safety of pedestrians and thanked local councillors for their direct action.

Cllr Andrew Henderson said: ‘The issue is that people with prams or buggies or even people on disabled buggies cannot get past these bushes and trees safely. The county council wouldn’t act so we did.’

Cllr Becky Cox said: ‘It was really bad, pavements and footpaths are for pedestrians and walks not for overgrown bushes and trees to cover and lay across.’

Cllr David Cox added: ‘I will be asking the county council; how bad does it have to be before they act.’

Local residents stopped to thank the team as they cut the bushes back.
