POLICE investigating the death of a 68-year-old cyclist in Teignmouth have been told a post mortem examination established he died of natural causes.br>Initially the incident, which happened on the outskirts of the town on Friday night, had been thought to be a hit and run.br>But inquiries carried out by officers who looked at CCTV footage from two Stagecoach buses revealed the cyclist, Fred Weston, from the Torquay area, had not been hit by a vehicle.br>He was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to Torbay Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. br>Mayor of Teignmouth Cllr David Cox and his brother Tim were among the first on the scene of the accident, in Teignmouth Road, and went over to help.br>Cllr Cox explained: 'I was driving to pick up my parents when I saw my brother's van at the side of the road and I wondered if there had been some kind of accident.br>'I carry a first aid kit in the boot of my car so I stopped.br>'My brother, who teaches first aid, said the man was not breathing and was concerned he might have internal injuries.br>'He was carrying out cardio pulmonary resuscitation when the ambulance arrived and took over.'br>Police have confirmed that no other vehicles are being sought in connection with the fatality.br>The road was closed for several hours and diversions put in place for traffic. br>The man's name has not yet been released until formal identification has taken place.br>The post mortem examination was due to be carried out this week to establish the cause of death.br>Cllr Cox said: 'The cyclist was 68, had been on a 100-mile bike ride and had just ridden up a very steep hill coming into Teignmouth from Holcombe. br>'He had nearly reached the top when he came off the bike.br>'It is very sad but I am pleased it was not a hit and run.'br>Bus driver Dave Chillery, from Dawlish, had been operating a Stagecoach service at the time of the incident and was travelling towards Dawlish.br>He said police officers had looked at CCTV from his bus and another bus which had been travelling in the opposite direction.br>He said although initially there had been reports of a hit and run, the images appeared to show there had been no contact between the cyclist and any other vehicle.br>He explained: 'I was coming the other way and when I passed the ambulance and paramedics were there.br>'It appeared he had been last in a line of other cyclists.'
