Race-goers in Newton Abbot on Sunday got a surprise when they glanced at the television screens dotted around the race course.

For instead of the usual information about the day's card they saw a message from punter Darren Symonds, who had managed to wangle the opportunity to propose to his girlfriend Bethan Hughes.

The couple were on an outing from Wales and Darren had decided that the venue was ideal for popping the question to his girlfriend of two years as both his own and bride-to-be's family were in the party.
