FOLLOWING the decision by Teignbridge Highways and Traffic Orders Committee of Devon County Council to approve several Traffic Regulation Orders (TRO) for Queen Street, Cllr Jackie Hook reacts to the outcome.
'I am delighted that the final step in the process to consider this transformational investment for Queen Street and our town centre received near unanimous support, nine votes to one' Cllr Hook said.
'This is the culmination of a wish first incorporated by the public in the Community Plan for the town, transferred to the Town Council's Neighbourhood Plan and now enabled through the Future High Street Fund' she added.
The TROs will introduce a 20mph speed limit, prohibit vehicular traffic and amend the, waiting, parking and loading restrictions along Queen Street.
And the scheme can now be recommend for construction at Cabinet of Devon County Council in July.
'There have been several stages of public consultation and appropriate changes to the final proposals made at each stage' Cllr Hook said.
'This final scheme has tried to balance competing views, which range from support for full pedestrianisation to a do nothing view.
'This is the first step in transforming our town centre enabling it to thrive into the future and reflecting changes in our shopping and leisure habits; the start of a journey to transform our town into a unique centre and community hub where locals and visitors will want to spend their leisure time and money' she added.
