A year after London-based Newmark Property Investments Ltd submitted plans for a 61-room Travelodge in the heart of Newton Abbot, the company has confirmed the project has stalled.

The delay has been described as a 'huge frustration' by those hoping to rid the town centre of one its last derelict sites.

The scheme received planning permission after Newmark said it had been 'aware of the need to improve the current hotel and retail facilities' and had designed a building that 'reflects the function of the building in a contemporary style of architecture whilst complementing the character of the area.'

But managing director Mark Goldbart has encountered problems finding a tenant for the 8,000sq ft retail unit planned for the ground floor.
