A PETITION to make Denbury a 20mph village has been handed to Devon County Council.

Residents and councillors want to see a blanket 20mph speed limit and traffic calming measures on all roads leading into and around the village.

The petition, which has been signed by 220 residents, was handed to county council leader John Hart at a full council meeting.

Ashburton mayor Cllr John Nutley – who is set to stand in May’s county elections for Denbury – marched to the council’s Exeter base with resident Valerie Denning to present the document.

Cllr Nutley, who knocked on every door in the village to get the petition signed, said it was ridiculous that there was no speed limit in the village and something had to be done.

Current county member for Denbury Alistair Dewhirst said: ‘There has long been a desire by many villagers in Teignbridge South to have a 20mph speed limit through their communities.

‘I support Cllr Nutley, who when approached by a Denbury resident, helped her to take a petition to the county council.

‘As far as I can see there would be no downside to this aspiration by residents for a safer and cleaner village.’
