LEADING Teignbridge Liberal Democrat Martin Wrigley says Boris Johnson’s departure has been ‘a long time coming’.
He said the departing prime minister had been known as ‘unreliable and untruthful’ for some time.
Speaking to the Mid Devon Advertiser, town and district councillor Wrigley said: ‘He has let this country down and it deserves better.
‘Whether he is fit to stand while the party chooses another leader is another question.
‘It’s going to be an interesting time while they go through the selection process.’
He described the last few weeks as a ‘circle firing squad’.
Cllr Wrigley said a general election would be the way forward to determine the will of the country.
He said:’ The real problem is focussing on the cost of living crisis with an estimated 10 million people falling under the poverty line.’
He believes one of the Conservative Party’s problems is that when Boris Johnson became prime minister, he expelled many Tories who had any talent to run government.
As for a successor, Cllr Wrigley said: ‘There is just a paucity of choice.’
