A widely respected Devon football personality has sadly passed away.

Barry Hayward died unexpectedly at the weekend.

As well as playing for many years, Barry was also a well-regarded referee and football coach. He served as vice chair of the South Devon League and had been a member of the Devon FA Council since 2000, holding the position of vice chair of the south area committee.

‘Barry was not only a respected figure within Devon football, but also a caring, sincere and much-loved member of our football family,’ the Devon FA spokesperson said. ‘His loss will be felt deeply by all who knew him.

A huge advocate of women’s football, Barry managed Liverton Ladies and Exeter Rangers in the 1980s before taking on roles with Torquay United Ladies, Stoke Gabriel Ladies, Galmpton Ladies and Brixham Villa.

‘His commitment to the growth of women’s football in the South Area and across Devon was unwavering, and his impact on the game will be felt for generations,’ the Devon FA commented.

Barry registered as a referee in June 1992 and was an active and valued member of the South Devon Referees Association. He was known for his passion for supporting and guiding new referees.

Alongside his officiating, Barry played a leading role in the administration and development of football in Devon. His influence was especially evident in the County Cup programme, where he was instrumental in developing the finals into the memorable occasions they have become today.

‘More than his titles and achievements, Barry will be remembered for his warmth, sincerity, and genuine love for the game and its people,’ the Devon FA spokesperson said. ‘He gave his time freely, shared his knowledge generously, and always placed the good of the game – and those who play it, at the heart of everything he did.’

‘The Devon Football Family has lost one of its true champions, and he will be deeply missed.’
