DEVON County Council (DCC) are supporting and empowering communities across the county by raising awareness of flood risk.

The council is promoting practical steps that will help residents feel more confident and prepared for flooding as part of Flood Action Week.

Around 6.3 million homes and businesses are in areas vulnerable to flooding, and many don’t even realise.

With heightened awareness, the correct knowledge, and preparation, we can build a county that is better equipped to face these challenges and reduce the impact of future floods.

That is why DCC are encouraging everyone to take part in Flood Action Week and stay flood aware – not just this week, but for the long term.

Throughout the week, the council will be sharing key tips, information and resources on its social media channels and through the Devon Resilience Innovation Project (DRIP) platforms and website.

What actions can I take?

• Make a flood plan: This could be a personal, family, community, or business plan, and should include emergency procedures, evacuation routes, and key contact details so you know what to do if flooding occurs.

• Prepare a flood kit: Pack essentials like torches, a mobile phone, non-perishable food, bottled water, medication, important documents, and warm clothing.

• Sign up for free flood warnings to stay informed and act early.

• Check your flood risk online for the next 5 days and in the long-term

• Protect your property: Store valuables higher up and consider installing flood doors, barriers, or other resistance and resilience measures.
