A central feature of communities across Devon and witness to life events across the ages – the historic church - will be celebrated on Saturday (September 13) in a bid to retain these treasured buildings.

Devon Historic Churches Day, will see many churches open their doors to the public with various events to celebrate their continued role in the community and raise money for their continued upkeep.

Across Teignbridge there are various events to celebrate these iconic buildings. Whether you want to visit an individual church or follow a trail, here is your guide to making the most of Devon Historic Churches Day.

Saturday September 13 2026

St Michael’s Kingsteignton, TQ12 3BQ 10:30am-4:30pm

Reminisce about the war as St Michael’s celebrates the recent 80th anniversaries of VE Day and VJ Day. There will be a best-dressed war competition and a chance to chat with Kingsteignton History Society. Visitors can also take a trip up the church tower and see art displays and an operational model railway.

St Mary’s, Kingskerswell TQ12 5LD 10am-4pm

There’s a chance to climb the church tower at St Mary’s in Kingskerswell as well as seeing the ringing chamber and try ringing the bell. There will also be guided tours of the church along with refreshments and a cake stall.

St John’s, Bishopsteignton 10am-12:30pm

Discover the links between St John’s and Nelson with a fascinating talk by Henny Ridd from Bishopsteignton Heritage called ‘Where Nelson Heroes Rest: The Admirals of Bishopsteignton.

St Clement’s Powderham 1pm-5pm

The family church of the Earl of Devon, St Clements will host a talk by Charlie Courtenay, the current Earl of Devon, at 2pm. Visitors will also be treated to musical interludes and cream teas throughout the afternoon.

Newton Abbot Ride and Stride

Cycle or walk around Newton Abbot to visit churches on the Parish’s Ride and Stride circuit:

A local historian will be on hand to guide you around the church and answer any questions. There will also be tea, coffee and light refreshments available

Arts and Crafts Trail around the Beacon Parish churches

Friday September 12 – Monday September 15 10am-4pm

Walk or drive to see the local arts and crafts on display across five churches in the Beacon Parish Mission Community. As well as showing off the talent of local artists and the beautiful architecture in the five Grade 1 listed churches, the show will raise money for the restoration of the bell tower at St Peter and St Paul in Broadhempston.
