From cakes sales to spotty fashion shows to the dreaded wax-off, people in Teignbridge did all manner of silly things to raise money for Children in Need, writes Lindsey Sill.

The charity helps change the lives of thousands of disadvantaged children and young people in the UK.

On Friday, people in the south west dug deep into their pockets, pledging half-a-million pounds. That figure will grow as schools, businesses and individuals pay in the money they have raised themselves.

Newton Abbot racecourse was the venue for former UK Strongest Man, Andy Zenonas' challenge to pull a 15-tonne fire engine. On the day it was pouring with rain, and try and he might, Andy, from Torquay, couldn't budge the machine.
