GAIL LITHGOW WILLIAM LITHGOW MIKE TAYLOR Open Shutters, Pottery Court, Chudleigh.
A new gallery and photographic studio in Chudleigh – Open Shutters – offers a diverse and distinct choice of art for Nine Days of Art 2006. Gail Lithgow's photographic art, William Lithgow's woodturning and Mike Taylor's watercolours and pencil drawings will all be on show under one roof. Gail's photographic art depicts scenes from as far away as Sri Lanka and Malawi and as near as as Dartmoor scenes and landscapes. The contemporary images are presented on canvas or are giclee printed and stylishly framed. Gail's father William has been woodturning for 20 years. Interesting wood for the individually handcrafted pieces are often sourced locally, with different techniques used only occasionally to add texture enhancing the natural beauty and colour of the wood. One particular piece currently on display is an unusual bowl made from burr oak. Gail's partner Mike, a trained graphic artist, will also use the gallery space for his exhibition featuring watercolours and drawings capturing the local landscape. He also intends to produce portraits in conjunction with the photographic studio. Open Shutters will be open for the whole of the Nine Days of Art and with other Old Pottery Court artists and the local café off the courtyard it will be well worth a visit. All are welcome.
Mother and son inspired by moor and sea
Joanna RADFORD NICK RADFORD Hannaford Old House, Poundsgate, Devon.
Hannaford Print Workshop Studio was created when a leaking flat garage roof was replaced with a pitched roof, allowing space for storage and a studio. It is open for part of Teignbridge Nine Days of Art and will be showing work by Joanna Radford and her illustrator son Nick. There will be paintings, prints and artists' books for sale and Joanna will be able to demonstrate printmaking techniques. Visitors may even try their hand at making a quick print. Opening hours are 10am to 4pm Saturday, September 9 to Wednesday, September 13 and 10am to 1pm on Thursday, September 14.
Joanna has lived in Devon since 1975 on Dartmoor since 1981. Largely self-taught, she joined Dartington Print Workshop in 1992, and has exhibited work under its auspices as well as through Dartmoor Artists in Ashburton and at Dartington College of Arts. Her inspiration is Dartmoor and Connemara, Ireland, where, having been brought up and educated in Dublin, she spends some time each year. Apart from making prints, mainly wood cuts, she is interested in producing artists' books of her prints which unfold in unusual ways: a recent one is Holne Unwound, which features images from the restored Rood screen in the church as woodcuts, and dry point engravings of houses in the Dartmoor village of Holne. Collaborative books are another spur to her creativity. 'I have just finished a book of lamb and mutton recipes made with other members of the Shetland Sheep Society using my wood engravings and prints, and one by Sally Cottis, a fellow Dartington printmaker, which will be for sale during Nine Days of Art, so not only I but also all other Shetland Sheep breeders in the area should be grateful to Teignbridge Council, the Mid-Devon Advertiser and Devon Artist Network for their support of this event!
Nick Radford has a degree in Illustration from Falmouth College of Arts and does work on commission for clients such as Stranger and Adrenalin magazines as well as designs for surf clothing companies. He is a dedicated surfer and his work is inspired by the sea and by the Cornish landscape, where he spends much of his time. Nick says: 'I am a freelance illustrator/graphic designer specialising in work for design, print and web. The artwork is hand-drawn, painted or printed, then rendered digitally in a graphic style influenced by the use of simple, flat colours in old screen printing and lithography techniques. The name, Frootful, reflects the creative process of looking back to move forward. To see more, visit http://www.frootful.co.uk">www.frootful.co.uk or contact: [email protected]">[email protected]." He is showing paintings executed over the years since he graduated from Falmouth in 1999 as well as postcards, and will take commissions based on the displayed artwork.
