PUTTING a sort of Dutch barn with a glass roof over Sherborne Road, Newton Abbot, would be cheaper than a new bus station. That was the suggestion of Stagecoach Devon managing director, Christopher Hilditch, who said he hoped Teignbridge Council would consider the idea. He said in a letter to the town council that he had made his views known to Devon County Council that Sherborne Road was a poor advert for the town, but with a roof, some better finishes, some decent stands and passenger facilities, Newton Abbot would be a decent place to use a bus. Mr Hilditch also turned his attention to the re-built road (Highweek Way) past the Asda store which was supposed to be a bus lane. 'The continued unavailability is a nuisance to us,' and he criticised the loss of the roundabout at the library end, meaning buses could not turn round, causing a delay for the 12 service which now had to go around the block. But Cllr Ken Lewis told the Newton Abbot Local Transport Partnership on Wednesday that covering Sherborne Road would make matters worse because it would kill the air quality. It would not stop the problem of women with children dicing with death with their buggies dodging between buses. 'To me the place for the bus station is the empty road Highweek Way,' he said. Cllr Mike Ryan said the bus company was calling the kettle black. 'The bus company closed the bus station down and sold it off. Now it wanted Teignbridge Council to put it right. 'If they are going to complain let them put their money where their mouth is. The bus station is in a poor position and I do not think there is any way out of it,' he said. Cllr David Howe said he could not see a decision being made logically on the bus station until pedestrian works were finished in the next 18 months. The meeting heard that Teignbridge and the county council were well aware of the town council's views that improvements were required in the short term as well as looking at the long term position.
