q Children from Rydon Primary School, Kingsteignton, have turned eco-warriors and joined forces with the Woodland Trust to plant native trees in the school grounds.

The trust supplied 30 saplings including wild cherry, rowan and silver birch as part of its Tree For All campaign, the largest mission of its type yet in Britain.

Since 2004 one million children have planted 12 million trees. The aim is to promote respect for the environment.

The children who are part of the school's Eco Warriors club had a great time deciding where to place the saplings.

Rowan Godfrey, seven, said: 'It was really difficult as there were lots of weeds and ivy to dig up, and when we had made the holes the earth crumbled back in again.'

Eight-year-old Sophie Short agreed it had been tough but also plenty of fun and in a good cause.

'We're doing it to help save the planet,' she said.
