A TINY Teignbridge primary school has proved it punches above its weight after making an ‘outstanding’ impression on Ofsted inspectors.

Broadhempston Primary School has just 42 pupils but has been praised by education inspectors for its Outstanding approach to personal development and behaviour.

Headteacher Karen Barlow said: ‘We’re a true village school, embedded in the local community.

‘Our small size creates a real family feel – I’m proud to lead such a dedicated team and a school full of happy, well-rounded children.’

The schools graded Outstanding in its most recent Ofsted inspection in October 2024 for its Personal Development and Behaviour and Attitudes.

The school was rated as Good for its Leadership and Management in the same inspection, providing a high-quality education for its pupils.

Set in a Victorian building dating back to 1870, the school has access to a large new-build sports hall where it regularly hosts PE, school concerts and performances.

The school itself has well-stocked library, and a spacious playground with brand-new play equipment. Despite its small size, the school has a community ethos and provides a uniquely personal learning experience larger primaries struggle to match.

Outdoor learning includes regular forest school sessions in local woodland, nature walks and field trips around the area.

The school’s active PTFA is renowned for going all-out on imaginative, family-friendly fundraisers, including this year’s Harry Potter–themed Halloween party in the local church, complete with cinematic lighting, costumes and story-based play.

Parent Dr Sarah Kingdon’s son Toby recently completed six happy years at Broadhempston Primary and her daughter Florence is currently in year two.

Dr Kingdon said: ‘Because it’s such a small school, the teachers are able to give incredible individual attention and the mixed year-groups create a sense of family.

‘My children have thrived here both socially and academically.

‘I feel so lucky to have Broadhempston as part of our family’s story. It’s given my children the best possible start.’
