A FOCUSED student from Newton Abbot has picked up an international accolade thanks to her prowess behind the lens

Katy Johnson, a BA (Hons) Commercial Photography student from Plymouth College of Art, has won an IPA 2021 Honourable Mention in the International Photography Awards.

 Twenty-year-old Katy won the Honourable Mention in the category of Editorial/Press - Environment for her image, ‘The farmer, the tractor and his land’.

She was selected out of over 13,000 entries, from 120 different countries worldwide.

 The International Photography Awards conducts an annual photography competition for professional, non-professional, and student photographers on a global level, creating one of the most ambitious and comprehensive competitions in the photography world today. The IPA recognizes photography’s leading talents who are creating, shaping and defining the world of photography today.

 ‘I was so pleased to get an honourable mention from the International Photography Awards, especially for this particular photograph of my partner George, a beef farmer in Torbay, with his tractor and land. He looks so proud!’ said Katy

‘Going forward, I intend to work as a commercial photographer in and around Torbay, focusing on people and the things that they care about.’

 Katy originally chose to study BA (Hons) Commercial Photography at Plymouth College of Art because the felt the course fitted perfectly with her career aspirations.

‘Prior to studying at degree-level, I participated in Saturday Arts Club and other Young Arts activities here,’ she continued.

‘That helped me to understand the ethos and atmosphere at Plymouth College of Art, helping me to feel at home here.’

Tim Gundry, Subject Leader of BA (Hons) Commercial Photography said: ‘We were absolutely delighted to hear that Katy’s work had been shortlisted in such a prestigious photography award. ‘

‘The image was part of Katy’s submission for her Editorial Photography module, where students explore environmental portraiture, with a particular focus on the people and culture of the South West.

Katy produced some outstanding work, and this image was a notable highlight, showcasing her excellent visual, technical and professional skills’.
