John Wright is a thoroughly good citizen – and that's official.
To prove it he has been given a special award by the Rotary Club of Teignmouth.
Mr Wright (centre) is pictured with his wife, Barbara, and Martin Beaney, chairman of the club, after a special lunch in his honour at the Cockhaven Manor, Bishopsteignton.
He was presented with an engraved rose bowl and a certificate which is now adorning the hall of his home at Woodland Avenue, Teignmouth.
'It's a local award from one's own people, that's why I'm so chuffed,' said Mr Wright.
The nomination came 'out of the blue' in January and the lunch was 'delightful', he said. 'They were very hospitable.'
Modestly, he insisted that his CV of achievements simply proved that as he grew older he needed to find something to do with his time, but it stretches back over the years.
He retired from Devon County Council where he was principal officer in the social services department in 1983.
He has been chairman of the Teignmouth Players, a member of the board of South Devon Health Authority, a committee member of the Torbay Centre for the disabled and vice chairman of the Torbay and South Devon Community Health Council.
He was chairman of Teignmouth and Shaldon Age Concern for 12 years, and was co-opted on to the South Devon Area Social Services committee.
He is a member of Teignbridge Council's standards committee and secretary of the Teignbridge Decorative and Fine Arts Society.
