Eight of River Teign Rowing Club's gig rowers took their gig Double Dutch to Mounts Bay's Regatta at Marazion.
They were the only Devon club rowers at the event, but despite the potential disadvantages of small numbers, entered all but one of the senior races.
The weather was bright with a gentle breeze, leaving the sea calm for most of the races.
With only two men in the squad, it was too much of a challenge to enter the men's A race but, for the B race, John Holgate and Graham Hill were joined by rowers from Fowey and Charlestown, coxed by Rachel Holgate.
A fair start in the second heat and time to adjust to unfamiliar team-mates gave a slow first leg, but confidence grew and, working together, they pulled up to the rest of the fleet and managed to finish in a creditable 15th place.
All six ladies – Sharon Sanger, Jane Avery, Rachel Holgate, Kelly Inness, Sue Thulborn, Julie Hill and cox John Holgate – took to the water for the second heat of the ladies' A race.
A good start saw them up with the lead group, vying for fifth place as they and the gigs ahead approached the first turning mark.
Careful avoiding action kept them clear of a major clash at the turn, but in a position to take the advantage when water was clear ahead.
They rowed well to be third place across the line – 11th on time – an excellent result as only two of the rowers had previous experience of A races.
The ladies stayed in their seats and picked up Graham Hill to cox the ladies B race. Despite the crew having just pulled around the course, they worked through the fleet and got the advantage on the second mark over Truro's gig, from which they rowed away on the homeward leg to take third place in the heat and seventh place (out of 20) on time.
For the veterans' race, the two men, half the ladies, Kath from Charlestown and a cox from Fowey took to the water again.
A great performance around the course saw them pass a number of rivals, see off a challenge from Avarack at the second turn and row through Defiance 150 metres from the line to finish just behind Charlestown's all-men's crew.
The final race saw the other half of the ladies, the two men and Fran from Charlestown form a mixed crew, with Rachel Holgate coxing.
Teign got a great start, and spot-on timing and lots of power had them making the most of every opportunity to pass gigs. A final push saw them row through Lark on the final leg to finish about eighth.
Teign's next excursions will be to Mevagissey and Salcombe tomorrow and Sunday.
