Lesley Whittaker, of Hennock, writes:Once again I have received the farcical threat that is the Electoral Registration Form. This time it requires me to look into my crystal ball and say who will be alive and living at this address in more than three months' time, on October 15. That's even worse than usual. If I don't send this form back 'as soon as possible' I am told 'the law' requires Teignbridge Council to follow me up as a non-responder. I am committing a criminal offence if I do not give true and correct details on the form now. And I have to sign a declaration to that effect. But how can anyone know who will be alive and living here in three months' time, let alone solemnly declare it to be true and correct? Is it 'the law' that is stupid? Or those putting it into effect? Or those of us who sign the form despite the fact that it is patently rubbish? And isn't it curious that all last year's details are carefully printed in for us to confirm, except for the vital little column which we ticked to say that we didn't want our names to be on the register of names to be sold? This is obviously such a revenue source for the council that it is prepared to overlook the declared preference of its citizens when it prints the forms. It leaves out the tick that stops this nasty little source of junk mail and unwanted phone calls. Come on, Teignbridge. At least be consistent. Print all the information you have, or leave us to fill in the lot. It is just too easy for us to miss ticking that blank column headed Edited Register. I wonder how much you make from selling our details if we do miss it?Too many people have died to earn us our vote for me to suggest that anyone should ignore their Electoral Registration Form, but it does no good at all to the cause of democracy to make a mockery of the way we are asked to sign up for it.
