Crowds gathered in Newton Abbot on Saturday for the crowning of the town's carnival royalty.

The queen, 14-year-old Eloise Ford, is a cadet with the Newton Abbot Detachment of D (South Devon) Company of the Devon Army Cadet Force.

She left her fatigues at home for the day, however and wore something rather more fetching for the occasion.

Her fellow cadets formed a guard of honour during the ceremony at which attendants Tegan Berry and Sophie Lake were also introduced.

Town development manager Sally Henley said she was thankful that the sun put in an appearance during what is becoming a record-breaking wet summer.
