Newton Abbot AC had 10 athletes competing for South Devon Schools in the Devon County Schools Track and Field Championships, held on Saturday at the Exeter Arena. They all competed well, with the outstanding performance coming from inter girl Emily Martin, who took first place in the javelin with a new club record throw and English national standard of 36.76m. This gained her selection for Devon in next week's South West Regional Schools Championships, along with club-mates Nick Gillard, who was second in 200m inter boys in 24.3s and Caroline Parmenter, who was third in the junior girls' high jump with a personal best of 1.50m. Other good perfomances came from junior boy Oliver Rietschy who was fifth in the 800m with a pb of 2.20.1s, junior girl Thuza Edworthy, fourth in the 800m with grade 4 standard of 2.38.8s, and Nikita Higginson sixth in the 75m hurdles in 13.9s. In the inter boys, Peter Heathman was fourth in the javelin with a personal best throw of 36.43m, Lewis Beare was second in the long jump with 5.82m, Matt Peterson was fifth in the high jump with 1.60m and Daran Haarer fifth in the 800m with a pb of 2.08.8s.
