DEVON singer-songwriter Benjamin Haycock wowed the judges on ITV’s The Voice tonight (Saturday) with an emotional performance that saw all four judges turning their chairs for him.
Sir Tom Jones, Olly Murs, Will.i.am and Ann-Marie were all blown away by the Exeter-based singer’s own composition Restlessness - a tribute in memory of his dad.
Said Benjamin ahead of his audition on the show : ‘ I will be singing one of my own songs called Restlessness. It’s a very personal one to me.
‘The song is an open letter to my dad. I was 16 when my dad died. He had a wonderful heart and he was always the happiest man in the room and to lose him at such a young age was a big thing,’
‘The song is from me telling him what I have been through but where I am now, married, living in Devon and it’s almost like coming out of the other side.’
The emotional performance visibly moved all four judges.
A moved Will.i.am told him ‘’You’re the real deal’’ , while Anne-Marie praised him for his ‘’amazing voice and amazing tone’’.
Sir Tom Jones added that he had ‘’taken it to another level as far as I’m concerned. The rhythm is fantastic, the timing and the singing is what I liked. It was tremendous.’’
Of course the hard decision was which judge to chose - and in the end it was the former Black-Eyed Peas frontman Will.i.am who won Benjamin over by saying in his pitch that he would never tell a singer what to sing but instead let them blossom.
