A village school in the Teign Valley is once again preparing to throw open its gates to hundreds of art lovers, who between them are expected to spend tens of thousands of pounds on original pieces.

Every two years, Doddiscombsleigh Primary School is transformed into a gallery displaying hundreds of exhibits from the south west.

Established in 2001, the last three-day show in 2009 resulted in sales worth £33,000.

The school takes a commission and the money used to support projects such as the development of an outdoor jungle gym and an amphitheatre.

This year students from the Centre for Creative Industries at Exeter College will join with the 50 established artists who are exhibiting.

Show chairman Jo Clunie said: 'The Doddiscombsleigh Art Show is such a phenomenal success and we felt that it would be a great opportunity for students to exhibit alongside established artists.

'The ethos of the school is to grow and nurture pupils, help them achieve their potential, and we felt that it was equally important to assist students who have long since moved on from primary school.'

The show's patron since 2003, Michael Morgan, was once headmaster at Dartington Primary School and later principal of the Froebal Educational Institute.

He is also a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours.

'It is so important that we help showcase a range of talent that we have in the southwest,' he said. 'The Doddiscombsleigh Art Show is a very successful and professional show with which I am privileged to be associated.

'It provides the perfect outing for many of our local talented art students.'

Doddiscombsleigh's 50 pupils will also be involved, running a craft club each day for visiting children so parents can take a leisurely look round. There will also be an art show cafe.

Cornish artist Basma Ashworth said: 'It is inspiring to find a small, rural, state primary school being so creative and to witness the team effort of all the parents, teachers and children to host such an exhibition.'

Entrance is free. The opening times are 10am - 5pm October 28 and 29, 10am - 1pm Sunday, October 30.
