PROPOSALS to extend the lifespan and expand Heathfield landfill site have horrified Kingsteignton councillors.

Devon County Council's replacement waste plan, which is currently out for consultation, came under fire for its inclusion of the Heathfield site.

Suggestions for its future use include extending the current licence for the site which is due to expire in 2018 and possible expansion of its height.

But councillors fear any expansion of the site will increase lorry traffic in the town and would create an unacceptable increase in height.

Cllr Bob Thorne declared: 'This plan sent shivers down my spine.

'It has horrified me and if Heathfield is increased in height, it will be a disaster.'
